It’s 2019, and I am officially done with stodgy anti-phone thinkpieces.

From now on, the only criticisms of smart phones that I accept will be:

1) Manufacture that is incredibly taxing on the environment and relies on exploited labor

2) Planned obsolescence

3) Super creepy apps and functions that invade a person’s privacy without their consent

4) Smartphones being used to enable employers, family, and friends to demand a person’s engagement and availability at every hour of the day or night

Proposition: when one person has to cover a shift that is normally done by two people, they get paid double.  This is both to compensate them for working twice as hard, and to remove any temptation for management to think “hey, actually that wasn’t so bad, maybe we should do this more often.”

YES

Make the pay **more** than double for that one employee so that it’s more costly than hiring 2 people like they’re supposed to do in the first place

im pregnant.

i was taken advantage of by a man who held enough leverage over my whole family that i was terrified to protest.

i didn’t want any of this.

i can’t afford to be pregnant. i can’t afford to have a child. i can’t afford any of this.

my only option for terminating is finding a way to go to jackson, mississippi for four days to visit the only clinic in mississippi. my life is over if i dont.

i work hard at a terrible, dangerous job, literally putting my life on the line at work. i saved money for the procedure itself since i found out, but i can’t afford a trip to jackson…..i just cant. i have to pay for lodging, a bus ticket, transportation…. mississippi only allows first trimester abortions..im already at 13 weeks and time isn’t on my side.

please help me.

there’s a big difference between “food waste” as in “farmers destroy tons of food to avoid exceeding quotas” or “supermarkets throw away this much edible food because it doesn’t sell”

and “food waste” as in “it is not actually within the capacity of humans to perfectly predict and track household food consumption, so a certain amount of food per household inevitably goes bad and has to be thrown out every year”

the idea that food waste is the product of thoughtless consumers rather than corporate greed is really insidious

It’s an extremely popular opinion among middle and upper class white people.

Also, aside from this completely uneducated reasoning as to why minimum wage was created…

I can guarantee that there are tens of thousands of teenagers who have to pay bills and help support their families or are the only financial supporter to their family.

not to mention, if minimum wage was meant solely for high school students how would the business survive when students are in school?? are they only supposed to be open on the weekend? this “unpopular opinion” makes no sense.

Unpopular fact: in the 70s a minimum wage worker could pay for college with a summer job.

Unpopular fact: minimum wage was conceived to be the minimum amount of money a person would need to support themselves and their families when working 40 hours per week.

Unpopular fact: minimum wage was created because working men and women in this nation fought–figuratively in the negotiating room and literally in the streets–for a fair working wage, with sweat and blood and tears and death.

Unpopular fact: military service personnel are not the only people who have fought and died for your rights as American: labor leaders and common workers laid down their lives so that you could have a 40 hour work week instead of 80 hours; so you could have a 2 day weekend instead of none; so you could have lunch and bathroom breaks instead of going hungry and shitting your pants,; so you could have a three day weekend in September.

Capitalism would NEVER dole out basic human decency without literal human sacrifice.

when you find an academic source that’s perfect for your paper but it’s behind a pay wall

image

Deciding to cite it anyway base on the abstract, knowing your professor probably won’t go through and look up every source in works cited

image

if you guys want to read academic papers but they’re behind a paywall, get the chrome extension Unpaywall. when you visit a site that requires you pay for their journal to view the article, the extension will look for other open access sites that will show you the article for free, and it’s all completely legal. all that money goes to the publisher, the writer of the paper gets none of it. https://unpaywall.org

If you can find out an author’s name, contact them. They may be willing to email it to you.For free.

Check researchgate.net and academia.edu! Also authors’ professional websites.

TIL that in 1985, police engaged in a standoff with the black liberation group ‘MOVE’ at their home in Philadelphia. A massive firefight ensued in which the police used choppers to drop two C4 bombs on the roof. The fire destroyed 65 houses and 11 people died.

via reddit.com

Half of the people who died in the bombing were children. The youngest of whom was only seven. Two hundred and fifty people were left homeless. When the bomb was dropped, the firefighters were ordered to stand back and not do anything to help. Police shot people as they tried to escape. And while the city apologized and called the bombing “unconscionable” the only person who was ever criminally charged in the affair was Ramona Africa, the sole adult survivor of the bombing.

Seriously, every single American should be required to learn about the MOVE bombing.

While this is going around, probably worth adding that Ramona Africa is currently suffering from cancer and asking for help with medical fees, gofundme here: https://www.gofundme.com/helpsaveramonaafrica

Jewish and Muslim people go on Chopped and are made to cook with pork and they make it work, one vegan goes on and refuses to use any meat products he’s given and they have an all veggie episode for him.

The final basket had honey in it and e refers to it as a total nightmare scenario. Go talk to the Muslim woman who knocked out a pork loin without being able to taste her dish about dealing with nightmare baskets

My mum was watching a baking show where a 20 year old Muslim woman was a contestant. They had to make an alcoholic dessert. She nailed it despite not being able to taste it. When she mentioned that she couldnt (not as a complaint or excuse) everyone gawked at her and someone said “how old are you???”. Like, really?

I saw that one! Seemed like purposeful sabotage when your contestant can neither religiously or legally taste the ingredient

Cultural insensitivity and racism in media?

Unheard of!
